It's been a minute...

It's been... a while since I posted here. Since I last wrote an entry for this Section 514 blog, so many things have happened in the country and the world. Being on furlough from my government contracting job, among the other things I'm doing, I've decided to start writing here more.

It's been a busy few weeks artistically, too. On October 4th, I took part in Art Attack, Fredericksburg, VA's annual day of creating, outdoors, on the streets, which was incredibly invigorating. It can't be understated how nice it feels to be making art and having neighbors and friends stop by to say hello and see what you're doing. I made some card paintings, which I hadn't done in a while. These aren't your usual artistic fare, but they're novel, and I had at least 20 people stop by during the day to take a look and ask what I was doing. It's clear that even in an era where we tend not to talk with each other, when you get people outdoors, interacting with each other in person, they are interested in new experiences and things that are different from their usual experiences.

The people who stopped by included a bunch of high school students wearing tee shirts from their church, kids coming in and out of the card shop that graciously allowed me to "occupy" their doorstep, and retired couples and groups just walking up and down the street. Here are a few of the card paintings I made:

I was also in two art shows at Ponshop, one of my favorite galleries and a mainstay of the Fredericksburg, Virginia arts community. The first, Remixed 10, was an exhibit of paintings made on discarded LP records (note the recurring theme of creating something new from something old), and the second, which is on view now through November 1st, is a painting incorporating old Hollywood, Python code, and the general theme of robotics and AI in a show called "Electric Cafe."

"La DivAIne," acrylic on gessoed board,
which you can see at Ponshop

It's been wonderful becoming more involved in the area's arts community, and I'll look forward to sharing more about it here. What are you doing to create now? Please let me know in the comments!
